Awesome. I'd always found the amentum to be easier to use than the atlatl however, especially if you use a bit of string instead of leather like you're supposed to.

Did you manage to stick anything with that arrow?

I didn't stick anything with an arrow.

I stuck this thing with a dart though.

The object you've readied in your first photo is an arrow. Darts are much shorter, and often lack a flight, though not always.

Neat stuff though.

"A spear-thrower or atlatl (/ˈɑːt.lɑːtəl/[1] /ˈæt.lætəl/; Nahuatl: ahtlatl Nahuatl pronunciation: [ˈaʔt͡ɬat͡ɬ]) is a tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in dart-throwing..."
- Wikipedia

The term dart, unlike the term arrow, does not only refer to one type of missile.  The term dart is also the proper term for what I am using there, again unlike the term arrow.

My knowledge comes from what I've found to be evident in some treatises and manuscripts, and other documents and findings, and how I've come to classify things with my fight group, so I accept the possibility that I could be wrong, but...

The projectile in your first photo is long, thin, and has fletching, and has to be launched with a tool. That constitutes an arrow. A dart is shorter, and doesn't necessarily need a tool to be launched properly. Then you've got javelins, which lack fletching and are thicker than arrows and darts, but function the same as the latter. Lastly you've got spears, which are the thickest of the bunch and also lack fletching, and cannot be thrown properly without being made specifically for the purpose of being thrown.

Using an atlatl doesn't automatically make whatever you're throwing a dart. Atlatls can be used to launch all of the mentioned projectiles if they are made and used correctly.

I could post a wall of links wherein the missiles in question are referred to as darts, but perhaps this one will be clear enough?  While it may seem closer to an arrow, dart is indeed the proper term.

I think this owes to the fact that the missile is thrown, albeit with assistance, rather than shot, and is fletched, unlike a spear, but like the more commonly known darts which do have plastic fletching.  It may also figure into the terminology that the head of the atlatl dart is typically made to be able to separate from the shaft of the dart without breaking the dart.

I can send you more links to support the terminology by PM if you want.

Actually I've decided I don't want to continue this argument because it just isn't worth it.

We have different ways of classifying things. Let's leave it at that.
