The bloated, orange and gold form approached from on high. Translucent wings beat against the cloudless sky as the thing's massive eyes blankly surveyed the landscape below.
"Stand your ground, men!" One Knight raised his shield, signaling others to do the same.
Ten rows of ten men stood on the barren, rocky ground. Some quivered. Most found themselves questioning their life choices. What good are honor, virtue, and bravery to a cold body?
"Here she comes!!"
The massive beast descended quickly. Its momentum alone projected an invisible wall that flattened a good twenty men. Bashed on the stones, a handful would move no more.
The great, gaping maw yawned, taking five men in one swipe. Prayer for their damned souls would have to wait, for now was not the time to lower one's sword. Again and again, the group swatted at the colossus' scaly flesh... but to no avail.
"Look! We barely scratch the Hellspawn! ‘Tis truly hopeless!"
The shimmering creature dipped and lunged, moving effortlessly above the fray. Arrows could not reach it at its height, and spears could not find weakness between its plates.
The carnage continued until no man could stand it any longer. The few that remained alive knew there were two foreseeable options. The frigid and loveless embrace of oblivion... or shameful retreat.
The men ran, armor sounding a clanking clatter of indignity.
The beast gave chase, but only for a moment before swooping upward and out of sight. The thing heard something... sensed something... a presence that no man below could comprehend.
It rose like a great, oval balloon, all the way to the surface. There, it caught flakes as they were tapped into the bowl.
The men watched from the safety of their castle as it impotently released a cluster of bubbles.
