Room 237
« on: 03:01:15 AM 10/25/13 »
So...

I watched this Documentary, titled "Room 237", which focused on "fan theories" surrounding Kubrick's "The Shining".

While some of the symbolism is definitely there (though even the most credible theories can be explained away) what made me really sad was that they gave equal time to people who had no fucking idea what they were talking about.

Stuff like a "Cowboy" poster relating to a minotaur because it's a COW... BOY...

Barghleglab.

The film was very poorly made, with people recording their theories themselves (while watching the film?). That hot mess was just laid over footage from the fucking Shining as it slowed down, repeated, etc. I REPEAT: There is NO (ZERO) ORIGINAL FOOTAGE IN THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENTARY... save for perhaps an entirely unrelated, groan-inducing, nonsensical animation...

Anyway, yeah, the Doc was shit exploiting "fan theory" and adding nothing. This was the "1 Weird Trick a Housewife Discovered! Click Here!" of movies.

Now... somewhat reasonable theories include the ideas that:

1.) The Shining makes references to the Holocaust
2.) The Shining makes references to Native American genocide
3.) A mix of both.

While I'm inclined to believe #3, I have to step back with a logical eye and look at things, here.

The Hotel was built on an "Indian burial ground" - What wasn't in those days? Every haunted house was over a cemetery or sacred ground, etc. Even some "Semetries" were. This means essentially nothing.

The Hotel has a lot of Native American themes to its art, including portaits. Problem with this is that plenty of "rustic lodges" do, as well. Hell, I could probably find some of this stuff (patterns, etc.) in my house - is my life a reference to the Native American genocide?

On the Nazi side of things, there's a German typewriter. That means nothing. Sure, "Lists" were very important to the Nazis - but you know what? So were a variety of horrible things not featured in the film in any respect. The typewriter changes colors, eh? Wow! It couldn't possibly be that they needed one that could do something the other couldn't - like perhaps replacing one that broke.

Eagles. There are also Eagles around. Because they symbolize Nazi Germany, not because they're the fucking OFFICIAL BIRD OF THE USA and are found all over the place.

There's a bit of guff about Kubrick faking the Moon Landing, but the only tangible evidence cited is that the kid wears a rocket ship sweater once.

I don't know.

What IS there is a clear theme of mirrors/reflection.

"Redrum" in the mirror. Twin girls. The maze layout is a mirror image of itself. The horrible tub lady is exposed for what she truly is... by a mirror.

And so it goes.

Just to play fun, if I had to come up with a weird fan theory, I would say that The Shining was about homosexuality. I don't know if it's Pro or Anti, but it's there if you want to find it. That's the problem with stuff like this - you CAN find things just BECAUSE you're looking.

Let's explore my "super true and real theory"...

In the film, Jack is reading a Playgirl magazine. PlayGIRL, not Playboy.

In the film, we see a man in a fursuit blowing a dude. (!!!)

In the film, Jack is tempted by a beautiful woman with a short haircut, who then repels him. (IE: You know you should want that, but EEEEWWWWWW!!)

Jack has a wife. He has a son. However, he's gay. The House, being evil and haunted, exploits this and makes Jack resent his family more and more though neither Wife nor Son know why.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" - Exactly what sort of "play" have you been denying yourself? Are you disappointed that you're a dull "boy"? You haven't BEEN working. You've been PLAYING with a handball. Jack, is there something you want to tell us?

Circling back, what do you see in a mirror, anyway? Someone the same as you, right?

Finally, Room 237.

Remember the mirrors? Remember how REDRUM becomes MURDER when you flip it?

Well, room 237 is the room with the beautiful woman who gets Jack all hot, then totally cockblocks him.

237, flipped entirely around, is LEZ.

The room you must never enter, the room with the arguably dominant "evil spirit" of the entire house, who may or may not run the whole show, contains a gal that totally grosses out dudes.

Suck on that, Documentary-Faces.

I love that mid movie, they say mstrmnd declined to speak on the thing. They hardly even mentioned mirrors, which is clearly the first thing that should be mentioned.
